A free AllTrails alternative for the mountains.

AllTrails is the biggest trail catalogue. Traverse is a free 3D mountain map with slope angles and trip plans. Here is how they differ, including where AllTrails is the better choice.

/ The short answer

Pick by how you go out.

If you want a huge catalogue of well-reviewed day hikes in many countries, AllTrails is built for that and Traverse is not. If you want to read mountain terrain, see how steep it is, and leave a trip plan, Traverse does that for free, in the area it covers.

Checked 7 October 2026. AllTrails figures are the standard US prices reported by several outlets and its own pages; prices differ by country and change often. “Not listed when we checked” means we did not find the feature, not that it cannot exist. See all four apps side by side on the comparison page, or the Traverse pricing page.

/ Where each is strongest

Both have a place.

Traverse

Mountain terrain and safety for free: 3D terrain you can read, a slope-angle and aspect layer, sun by time of day, trip plans with check-ins and an SOS that only says what it knows. Strongest in the Western Balkans today.

AllTrails

Finding a well-known trail fast, with reviews, photos and recent conditions from many hikers. Best where its catalogue is dense, especially North America.

/ Questions
Is there a free alternative to AllTrails?
For mountain terrain and safety, Traverse is free: the 3D map, recording, trip plans and SOS cost nothing and have no ads. It is not a copy of AllTrails: it does not have its catalogue of reviews.
Does AllTrails have a slope-angle layer?
We did not find one listed when we checked on 7 October 2026. Traverse has one, free, for Kosovo, Albania and the Sharr range.
Can I use both?
Yes. Many people use a catalogue app to find a trail and a terrain app to look at how steep it is. Export a track as GPX and open it in the free GPX viewer to see it in 3D.
Does Traverse work outside the Balkans?
The 3D map and the GPX viewer work worldwide. The slope and aspect layers and our trail and hut data cover Kosovo, Albania and the Sharr range today.
Is Traverse affiliated with AllTrails?
No. AllTrails is a trademark of its owner and is named here only to compare.
