Which hiking app for Albania and Kosovo?

Travel guides for Theth–Valbona and the Peaks of the Balkans recommend a handful of apps. Here is what each one does offline, honestly, including where Traverse falls short.

Get Traverse free
/ The short answer

Download one before you go. Two is better.

Signal is missing on parts of the high ground, so have at least one map offline before you leave Shkodër, Tirana, Peja or Prishtina. Organic Maps is free, has no ads and works fully offline with OpenStreetMap trails. Wikiloc has the most tracks other hikers have walked. The Peaks of the Balkans Map app is made for that trail. Traverse adds 3D terrain, a slope-angle layer for Kosovo, Albania and the Sharr range, 18 mapped routes with elevation profiles, and free trip plans and SOS; on the free plan only 3 routes go offline, and whole regions need Pro.

Checked 16 October 2026. From each app’s own site or App Store listing, read through search results; see the sources below. “Not listed” means we did not find it, not that it cannot exist. Many older guides also mention Maps.me, which uses OpenStreetMap data offline; Organic Maps was started by its original developers and is the one we checked.

/ App by app

What each is good at, and where it stops.

Traverse

Built for the mountains of Kosovo, Albania and the Sharr range: read the terrain in 3D, see how steep it is, follow one of 18 mapped routes and leave a trip plan. The routes follow mapped OpenStreetMap trails and are not yet walked by our team. On the free plan 3 routes go offline; whole regions need Pro.

Organic Maps

The simplest free offline map: download Albania or Kosovo once and every path in OpenStreetMap is there, with contour lines and elevation profiles, no ads and no account. It does not show slope angle or 3D terrain, and has no safety features.

Wikiloc

The place to find tracks other people have actually walked, including many in Theth, Valbona and Rugova, with free offline topographic maps. Navigation with off-track alerts, live tracking and sending to a watch need Premium; quality varies from track to track.

Peaks of the Balkans Map

Made for one trail: the Peaks of the Balkans loop, with guesthouses, food and sights marked and a map you can download. Free on iPhone.

/ Before you go

Five things to do on Wi-Fi.

  1. Download maps and routesSave the maps and routes you need while you are still on Wi-Fi in town. In Theth, Valbona and on the high pastures you may have no signal at all.
  2. Leave a trip planTell someone where you are going and when you will be back. In Traverse, a trip plan texts your emergency contact if you do not check in.
  3. Know the numbersKosovo: 112. Albania: 112, and the direct lines 127 for an ambulance, 129 for the police and 128 for the fire service.
  4. Check the border rulesThe Peaks of the Balkans crosses borders away from checkpoints and needs permits in advance. Several summits sit on a border ridge.
  5. Charge for the whole dayGPS and a bright screen drain a phone fast. Carry a power bank and keep the phone warm in cold weather.
Near the borders in Kosovo
Official travel advice for Kosovo still warns that landmines and unexploded ordnance may remain in isolated forested and mountain areas near the borders. Stay on marked trails and established paths, and do not go alone.

Browse the hiking routes or start with Theth to Valbona. For the border permits, see Peaks of the Balkans.

/ Questions
What is the best offline map app for Albania?
For a free offline map of the whole country with OpenStreetMap trails, Organic Maps. For tracks other hikers have walked, Wikiloc. For 3D terrain, a slope-angle layer and trip plans in northern Albania, Kosovo and the Sharr range, Traverse. Many people carry two.
Which app should I use for Theth to Valbona?
Any of them works if you download the area before you go. Traverse shows the route from Theth over the Valbona pass with its elevation profile; Organic Maps shows the OpenStreetMap path offline; the Peaks of the Balkans Map app covers it as the first stage of the loop.
Is there an app for the Peaks of the Balkans?
Yes: the Peaks of the Balkans Map app, free on iPhone, is made for the trail. Traverse has the Theth to Valbona stage as a route with an elevation profile, and the whole loop on its destination page.
Is there mobile signal in the mountains of Albania and Kosovo?
Not everywhere. Parts of the high ground around Theth, Valbona and the border ridges have no signal, so download maps before you go and leave a trip plan.
What number do I call in an emergency?
In Kosovo, 112. In Albania, 112, or the direct lines 127 (ambulance), 129 (police) and 128 (fire). If you can call, call.
Is Traverse free?
Yes, with no ads: the 3D map, the slope-angle layer, every route, unlimited recording, trip plans and SOS. Pro (€44.99 a year, €19.99 in the region) adds whole offline regions and deeper stats; trip plans and SOS never need it.
