/ The short answer

Pick by how you go out.

If you plan hiking and bike routes across Europe and want surface types and community highlights, Komoot is built for that. If you want to read mountain terrain and slope angle and leave a trip plan, Traverse does that for free in the area it covers. Traverse has no road-cycling or bike-route planning.

Both have a place.

/ Questions
Is there a free alternative to Komoot?
For mountain terrain and safety, Traverse is free. It is not a replacement for Komoot’s bike and hiking route planning across Europe: Traverse plans over mapped trails in the area it covers and does not plan road or bike routes.
Does Komoot have a slope-angle layer?
We did not find one listed when we checked on 7 October 2026. Traverse has one for Kosovo, Albania and the Sharr range.
Can I use both?
Yes. Plan a route in the app you prefer, export it as GPX and open it in the free GPX viewer to see it in 3D with slope shading where our tiles exist.
Does Traverse sync routes to a watch?
Not yet. Garmin and other connections are planned but not available, and we will not say they are until they are.
Is Traverse affiliated with Komoot?
No. Komoot is a trademark of its owner and is named here only to compare.
