/ Where each is strongest

Pick the one that fits how you go out.

Traverse

Mountain terrain and safety, free: a slope-angle layer, trip plans that alert your contact and then a verified rescue team if you are overdue, and an SOS that only says what it knows. Strongest in the Western Balkans today.

AllTrails

The biggest catalogue of trails with reviews and photos in many countries, especially North America. Good for finding a well-known day hike.

Komoot

Route planning for hiking and cycling across Europe, with surface types and community highlights. One-off map packs if you dislike subscriptions.

Strava

Training and the social feed for runners and cyclists, with segments and detailed stats. Its terrain layers came over from FATMAP.

/ Questions
Is Traverse a free alternative to AllTrails, Komoot and Strava?
For mountain terrain and safety, yes: the map, 3D terrain, the slope-angle layer, recording, trip plans and SOS are free. If you mainly want a huge trail catalogue, training analytics or bike-route planning, the others may suit you better.
Which app has a free slope-angle map?
Of these four, Traverse. Strava has gradient and avalanche-gradient layers for subscribers; AllTrails and Komoot did not list a slope-angle layer when we checked on 5 October 2026.
Can I move my routes from another app?
Yes. Export your routes or activities as GPX from the other app and import them into Traverse.
Are these prices right where I live?
They are the standard prices the sources showed, in the currency they used. Apps change prices often and run discounts, and app stores show local prices, so check before you buy.
