A Wikiloc alternative with 3D terrain and slope angle.

Wikiloc is where many hikers in Kosovo and Albania share their tracks. Traverse is a free 3D terrain map with a slope-angle layer and trip plans. Here is how they differ, and when Wikiloc is the better choice.

Get Traverse free
/ The short answer

Tracks to follow, or terrain to read.

If you want the biggest choice of tracks other people have walked, Wikiloc is hard to beat: many published tracks for Kosovo and Albania are there, and Premium adds navigation with off-track alerts, live tracking and sending trails to your watch. If you want to read the terrain before you go, see how steep it is and leave a trip plan that alerts your contact if you are late, Traverse does that for free in Kosovo, Albania and the Sharr range. Many people will use both.

Checked 16 October 2026. Wikiloc facts come from its App Store listings and an App Store price tracker (sources below), read through search results because wikiloc.com did not load from our build machine. Prices change and differ by store and country. “Not listed when we checked” means we did not find the feature, not that it cannot exist. Slope angle describes the terrain, not today’s avalanche danger. See more apps side by side on the comparison page, and Traverse’s plans on the pricing page.

/ Where each is strongest

/ When Wikiloc is the better choice

Stay with Wikiloc if this sounds like you.

We would rather you pick the right app than pick us.

You want tracks other people have walked

Wikiloc’s member tracks far outnumber our 18 mapped routes, and many Kosovo and Albania hikes are published there first.

You go far beyond the Balkans

Wikiloc covers the whole world, with free offline topographic maps. Traverse’s slope layer and routes cover Kosovo, Albania and the Sharr range today.

You want off-track alerts

Wikiloc Premium warns you with a sound when you leave the trail. Traverse does not have off-route alerts yet.

You want trails on your watch

Wikiloc Premium sends trails to Garmin, Apple Watch, Suunto and COROS. In Traverse you send a route as a file for now.

You publish your tracks

On Wikiloc your tracks can help everyone. Routes you import into Traverse stay private to you.

/ Using both

Find a track there, read the terrain here.

There is nothing to cancel, and the two work well together.

  1. Download a track for your own useSave the GPX or KML of a trail you are allowed to use, for your own trip. Check Wikiloc’s terms; some downloads need an account.
  2. Import it into TraverseIn the app: You → Import a route, or Open in… / Share → Traverse. It becomes a private route only you see: 5 free, unlimited with Pro.
  3. Read the terrain and leave a planSee the route on 3D terrain with the slope layer and how much of it is steep, then leave a trip plan before you go.

Traverse never fetches, copies or republishes Wikiloc tracks. An import is your own file, for your own use, and stays private.

Look at any GPX track in 3D, without an account, in the free GPX viewer. Browse the hiking routes with their elevation profiles.

/ Questions
Is there a free alternative to Wikiloc?
For reading terrain in Kosovo, Albania and the Sharr range, Traverse is free with no ads: 3D terrain, the slope-angle layer, mapped routes, unlimited recording, trip plans and SOS. It does not replace Wikiloc’s worldwide library of member tracks.
Can I import Wikiloc tracks into Traverse?
You can import your own files: a GPX or KML you downloaded for your own use becomes a private route only you can see. Traverse never copies Wikiloc’s trails into the app.
How much is Wikiloc Premium?
On the US App Store it was $19.99 a year or $9.99 a quarter when we checked on 16 October 2026; prices differ by store and country. Traverse Pro is €44.99 a year, or €19.99 a year in Kosovo, Albania and the region, and the map, the slope layer, trip plans and SOS are free.
Does Wikiloc have a slope-angle layer?
We did not find one listed when we checked. Traverse has a free slope-angle layer for Kosovo, Albania and the Sharr range; it describes terrain, not today’s avalanche danger.
Does Traverse warn me when I leave the trail?
Not yet. Wikiloc Premium does. Traverse shows your position on the route while you record, and a trip plan alerts your contact if you do not check in.
Is Traverse affiliated with Wikiloc?
No. Wikiloc is a trademark of its owner, named here only to compare. Traverse is an independent app.
