Leqinat lake

From Kuqishtë in Rugova up to the lake at Leqinat, one of the high lakes above the village. About 1.3 km of the line runs on the Montenegrin side of the border; check the current rules for crossing it on foot before you go.

There and back the same way: 12.6 km, 1,200 m of climbing, about 7 h 55 min of walking. The figures above are one way.

These are the figures the app shows. Heights not smoothed yet: the climb is probably too high, about 760 m by a rough estimate. See how we got the numbers. The rule we use for newer routes would rate it Very demanding: plan for that.

How we got the numbers

Distance and climb come from the line itself, with heights from the Copernicus GLO-30 elevation model (30 m) and climbing counted once the height has changed by 3 m: these are the figures the app shows. This route was added before we smoothed heights. In forest the model measures the top of the trees, so the climb above is probably too high: a rough smoothed estimate gives about 760 m one way (860 m there and back). When the route is rebuilt, the app and this page will change together.

Walking time follows the DIN 33466 rule used by the German and Austrian alpine clubs, on the figures above, without breaks. The difficulty is the rating the route was given by hand when it was added to the app. The rule we use for newer routes (the climb and the walking time of the whole outing, one level up when 30 % or more of the line is on slopes over 30°) rates it Very demanding on the smoothed estimate, so plan for that until the route is rebuilt.

46 % of the line itself runs on slopes over 30° in the elevation model; slopes above it are not counted. This describes the terrain, not today’s conditions, and it is not an avalanche rating.

Check conditions before you go
Official travel advice for Kosovo still warns that landmines and unexploded ordnance may remain in isolated forested and mountain areas near the borders. Stay on marked trails and established paths, and do not go alone. Weather in the mountains changes quickly. Carry the route offline, leave a trip plan, and turn back if the path on the ground is not what you expected. If you can call, call 112. Traverse describes terrain, not today’s danger.
